Sanford, CSLR advance to Division 2 Finals

In game one of the WWHSHL Division 2 semi-final playoff series between the first ranked Beliveau Barracudas and the sixth ranked CSLR Renards this week, the Barracudas defeated the Renards 3-0. The Renards claimed game two with a score of 2-0. Series tied 1-1. In game three, with both teams fighting hard to advance, the period remained scoreless despite power play opportunities for both teams. In the second period, the Renards scored two goals, one breakaway goal at 13:44 (Purdom) and one power play goal just before the buzzer at .06 (Erikson). Both goals went unanswered, and the Renards led after the second period 2-0. In the third period, the Renards scored out of the gate at 19:44 (Purdom, Jeffrey), and then the Renards Purdom scored again at 7:51, assisted by Maitre, for a hat trick and the final goal of the game. Final Score: CSLR Renard 4-0 and the series win.

In game one of the WWHSHL Division 2 semi-final playoff series between the second ranked SJR Eagles and fifth ranked Sanford Sabres, the Sabres defeated the Eagles 6-1. Behind a game, the Eagles came out strong to capture what was undeniably a thrilling, edge of your seat game two. Despite chances at both ends, the goaltenders kept the first period scoreless. In the second period, the Sabres scored the only goal at the 5:52 mark (Drozd). In the third period, the rink erupted when the Eagles tied up the game with a goal at 7:22 (Popel, Sousa). The game remained tied as the seconds counted down to the end of the period, and it seemed like overtime was inevitable. But, with 28 seconds left on the clock, the Sabres Drozd caught a break and potted the game winning goal unassisted. Final Score: Sanford Sabres 2-1.

The Sanford Sabres and the CSLR Renards will face off in the WWHSHL Division 2 Playoff Finals at the Dakota Community Centre March 7, 9 and 13 if necessary. For additional details, check the series schedule.

Regular Season First Half Leaders

December 22 marked the end of a very competitive first half of play in the 2017-18 WWHSHL Regular Season. In CTV Division One, the St. Mary’s Flames, Dakota Lancers and CJS Olympiens are tied for first place with the Selkirk Royals knocking at their door. The SJR Eagles lead the Winnipeg Free Press Division, with the defending division champion Garden City Gophers one point behind. The Lorette Scorpions lead the Hire Marketing Division followed by last season’s championship finalist Glenlawn Lions and the rookie CPET Canadiennes.

The overall point scorers for the League are Ashley Keller, Beliveau Barracudas (33 points), and Dakota Lancers’ Risa Shatford and Sonya Neale (31 points). Leading the Goals against average is Emily Shippam, St. Mary’s Flames (1.88), followed by Rachelle Jeffrey, Beliveau Barracudas (1.49) and Grace Fedirchuk, SJR Eagles (1.50). Grace Fedirchuk also leads the League’s goaltenders with 6 shut-out victories.

Players of the Week ending December 8, 2017

St. Mary’s FlamesCTV Division 1:
Congratulations St. Mary’s Flames Jenny Kim whose outstanding offensive play contributed to two Flames victories this week. Jenny scored 2 goals and an assist in the Flames’ 5-1 win over the Miles Mac Buckeyes on Wednesday, followed by another goal and an assist in their 7-3 win over the Selkirk Royals on Thursday. Jenny’s 5-point week jumped her into the top 5 Flames’ point scorers, with a total of 11 points this season.
SJR EaglesWFP Division 2:
Congratulations SJR Eagles Paige Roddy whose stellar performance this week helped her team take first place in the standings, with a one-point lead over the Beliveau Barracudas. On Tuesday, Paige scored 2 goals in the Eagles 4-0 win over the Springfield Sabres, and then three days later, scored the game ending power play goal in their 5-0 win over the Sanford Sabres. Paige is one of the Eagles’ top scorers with 16 points this season.

Dakota LancersCTV Division 1:
Congratulations Dakota Lancers Risa Shatford and Sonja Neale for a monster effort that led their team to three impressive wins this week over the defending League champion VMC Trojans (5-4), Miles Mac Buckeyes (6-4) and the River East Kodiaks (3-0). Risa scored 3 goals and 3 assists and Sonya scored 4 goals and 2 assists, for a total of 6 points each in the three games.
SJR EaglesWFP Division 2:
Congratulations SJR Eagles Grace Fedirchuk for her outstanding goaltending performance this week. Grace stopped 36/37 shots in her team’s 4-1 win over the Beliveau Barracudas, stopped 19/21 shots to squeak out a 3-2 win against the CSLR Renards, and then stopped 17/20 shots in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss against the Springfield Sabres.

Players of the Week ending November 6, 2016

CTV Division:
Congratulations to Dakota Lancers’ Sonya Neale who was red hot as she scored 2 big goals this week; her second being the game winner late in the third period in a hard fought 5-3 victory over the powerful Shaftesbury Titans. Sonya was all over the ice and in addition to her scoring touch played a tough defensive game.
WFP Division:
Congratulations to SJR Eagles’ Alyssa Denis who was sensational this week. In game one, Alyssa stopped 29 shots in regular time and then stonewalled the Kelvin Clippers in over time and the shoot out to help her team to a 3-2 victory. In game two, she stopped all the shots the Miles Mac Buckeyes could muster in another shoot out and 1-0 win victory.

CTV Division:
Congratulations to CLC Scorpions’ Matti Borgfjord who scored a hat trick in a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Garden City Gophers. Matti was also on the ice for the final 45 seconds defending the 1 goal lead against 6 attackers who stormed the goal and came up short handed.

WFP Division:
Congratulations to SJR Eagles’ Nicole Van der Meulen who was on fire against the West Kildonan Wolverines as she scored 5 goals and added an assist . Nicole worked hard both offensively and defensively as she helped her team limit the Wolverines to just 1 goal.

Congratulations to FRC Centurion’s sparkling defense Andrea Bruce who helped her team defeat the Oak Park Raiders by a score of 4-1. Andrea showed her leadership qualities as she assisted on 3 of 4 goals, and scored one.

Winnipeg Free Press Division B:
Congratulations to SJR Eagles power forward Shannon Kleysen who was instrumental in helping her team beat the West Kildonan Wolverines 4-1. Shannon scored all 4 goals in the team’s 4-0 win over the Beliveau Barracudas.

Congratulations to Sanford Sabres’ goalie Jamie Maes who held a hot hand as she stopped all 26 shots in regulation time and 6 shots in the shootout to lead her team to a 1-0 victory over the Miles Mac Buckeyes this week.
