Flames, Lancers advance to Championship Finals

In game one of the WWHSHL CTV Division 1 semi-final playoff series between the first ranked St. Mary’s Flames and the fourth ranked CJS Olympiens this week, the Flames narrowly defeated the Olympiens 2-1. The Olympiens came out strong in game 2 and defeated the Flames 3-1. With the series tied 1-1, St. Mary’s opened the scoring at the 13:38 mark (Balcaen, Kim, Steciuk) of the first period, and then added two more goals in the second period, one at 12:39 (Howorth, Rakowski, Geisbrecht) and another at 1:46 (Steciuk, Balcaen, Howorth). The Olympiens turned up the heat in the third period to deny all the Flames scoring chances, however, they were also unable to get on the board. Final Score: St. Mary’s Flames 3-0 and the series win.

In the hotly contested semi-final series between the second ranked Dakota Lancers and the third ranked Selkirk Royals, the Lancers captured game one 3-1, and the Royals answered with a sound 4-1 defeat in game 2. With the series tied 1-1, both teams played to win in the deciding game three. Just as it looked like the first period would be scoreless, the Lancers scored a breakaway goal at the 3:50 mark (Borsboom) and the Royals answered just before the buzzer at .08 (Truthwaite, Johnstone, Horbaty) for a first period score 1-1. In the second period, the Royals struck first with a goal at 12:03 (Hobraty, Goetz), but the Lancers dominated the rest of the period scoring four goals at 8:12 (Sharford, S. Neale), at 8:03 (S. Neale, Olfert, Shatford), at 6:51 (S. Neale, Neale, Rubigny) and a powerplay goal at 5:55 (Shatford, S. Neale). Second period score Lancers 5 vs Selkirk 2. In the third period, the Royals struck first again with a breakaway goal at 14:48 (Carter). However, the Lancers seemingly unstoppable line of Neale and Shatford answered the Royals goal with three more of their own for a score of 8-3 at the 5:27 mark. The Royals managed one more scoring rally with 2 minutes left on the clock (Desjarlais), but it was not enough to claim game three. Final score: Lancers 8-4 and the series win.

The St. Mary’s Flames and the Dakota Lancers will face off in the WWHSHL Championship Playoff Finals at the Dakota Community Centre March 7, 9 and 13 if necessary. For additional details, check the series schedule.


Players of the Week ending December 22, 2017

Congratulations Selkirk Royals Cienna Palmer who helped her team claim two victories this week. On Thursday, Cienna turned her jests on, scoring 2 goals and an assist in her team’s 4-1 win over the Oak Park Raiders, and Friday, she scored another goal and an assist in another 4-1 win over the VMC Trojans. Cienna is the Royals’ leading scorer with a total of 24 points (14 goals, 10 assists), third highest point scorer in her division and fifth overall for the League.
Garden City GophersWFP Division 2:
Congratulations Garden City Gophers Rhea Alves for her outstanding goaltending this week. On Wednesday, Rhea stopped 33 of 35 shots in the Gophers’ heartbreaking overtime 2-1 loss against the CSLR Renards, and then held her ground on Friday, stopping 23 of 26 shots and leading her team to a commanding 7-3 victory over the JH Bruns Broncos.

Congratulations Selkirk Royals Rayley Goetz, a power forward whose determination earned her a hard fought assist in a 3-2 over time loss against the Dakota Lancers Wednesday, and the winning goal securing her team’s 2-1 over time win against the VMC Trojans Friday. Rayley has 17 points this season.
CSLR RenardsWFP Division 2:
Congratulations CSLR Renards Alyssa Erickson, who outstanding performance this week resulted in a goal and an assist against the Beliveau Barracudas Wednesday, and another two assists against the Sanford Sabres Thursday, for an impressive 4 points this week.

Players of the Week ending January 20, 2017

CTV Division:
Congratulations to Selkirk Royals Jodi Clifton for her incredible goaltending this week. Jodi back stopped two thrilling games – a 2-1 win against the VMC Trojans and a 3-2 SO loss against the Westwood Warriors. Jodi stopped 39 of 42 shots in 1:05 minutes of play this week. Tremendous goaltending!
WFP Division:
Congratulations to Lorette Scorpions Mackenzie Borgfjord who scored two goals in her team’s 3-1 win against the Fort Richmond Centurions, and two goals and an assist in her team’s 3-5 loss to the Springfield Sabres. Mackenzie’s perseverance netted a total of 4 goals and an assist for a total of 5 points this week and 24 for the season.

Players of the Week ending December 2, 2016

CTV Division:
Congratulations to Selkirk Royals Courtney Sorokopud-Jones, who in a battle of two heavyweights, scored a goal and an assist as the Royals knocked off the Jeanne Sauve Olympiens 4-2 in an action-packed game that was fun to watch and fun to play. Courtney has a total of 9 points for the season.
WFP Division:
Congratulations to Lorette Scorpions’ Emily Whittington, the back bone of her team, who stopped 21 of 22 shots fired her way defeating the SJR Eagles 2-1, and then later in the week, stopped 33 of 35 shots mustered up by the Fort Richmond Centurions in a 4-2 victory.

Players of the Week ending February 26, 2016

CTV Division: Congratulations to the PCI Saints’ Bailey Grantham who played a pivotal role in securing her 6th seeded team’s win over the 3rd ranked VMC Trojans. In the first game of the series, Bailey assisted the Saints’ lone goal in a 5-1 loss. In game two, she scored 2 goals in a needed 5-3 win; and then finished off the series by adding 2 crucial assists in their 3-0 win in game 3.

WFP Division: Congratulations to Selkirk Royals’ Courtney Sorokopud-Jones who raised her game a few notches, helping her team beat the tenacious CSHC Huskies 4-3 in over time. Courtney set up several scoring chances and was rewarded with a primary assist on the power play. Courtney then scored the game winning goal just 0:14 seconds in overtime.

CTV Division:
Congratulations to Westwood Warriors’ Alicia Prociuck who totaled up 6 points in her team’s two games this week. She opened the week with four goals in the 5-4 win over the Dakota Lancers; and two days later, she notched another goal and added an assist in her team’s 5-2 defeat against the Kelvin Clippers.

WFP Division:
Congratulations to Selkirk Royals’ Cassidy Ilchena who registered four goals and a helper in her team’s 12-1 victory over the SJR Eagles. Cassidy was able to score from all spots on the ice and was able to generate multiple other scoring opportunities to lead her team to the victory.

Congratulations to CJS Olympiens Paige Collins who started off the year with a Big Bang. Paige scored all 3 goals in a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Westwood Warriors and later in the week again scored the game winner in an equally thrilling 2-1 victory over the VMC Trojans.

WFP Division:
Congratulations to Selkirk Royals Courtney Sorokopud-Jones who was on fire all week. Courtney scored 2 goals in a tight 3-2 loss to the Miles Mac Buckeyes, and 4 more goals and 2 assists in their 10-2 win over the West Kildonan Wolverines.

CTV Division:
Congratulations to Westwood Warriors’ Emma Mitchler who had an outstanding performance in the qualifying series against the Springfield Sabres. Emma backstopped her team to a 2-1 series win by stopping 72 of 77 shots directed her way including a breakaway in the third period of their 2-1 victory and 2 phenomenal saves in the shoot out.

WFP Division:
Congratulations to Selkirk Royals’ Nadia Zelych who had a hot hand in the qualifying series against the Beliveau Barracudas, scoring 2 goals and 1 assist in her team’s 6-2 first game victory, and scoring another 2 goals in the deciding second game.

CTV Division:
CJS Olympiens’ goaltender Caroline Girardin who posted a shut out and allowed only one goal in her second game of the week leading to her teams two wins. Caroline made key saves at key times to to help preserve her teams leads.

WFP Division: WWHSHL congratulates Selkirk Royals’ goaltender Shayne Smellie who made 34 saves in her team’s lone win this week. Shayne finished the week 1-1 showing great poise in both games.
