Glenlawn Lions, KE Reivers Advance to the Finals

Thrilling, nail-biting, edge of your seat …… are the words that describe both semi-final deciding games in the 2018-19 Hire Marketing Division Playoffs yesterday.

At the East End Arena, the first ranked CPET Canadiennes opened the scoring against the fourth ranked KE Reivers with two goals in the first period, one at 5:23 (Baker, Murphy, St. Laurent) and another at 4:32 (Andrews, Snare). In the final seconds of the period, the Reivers managed to get on the board (Goulet, Fontaine) for a 2-1 first period score. The second period was hard fought with opportunities for both teams, and despite numerous power play opportunities, the second period remained scoreless. The momentum shifted in the third period with the Reivers scoring two goals, one at 15:58 (Baptiste, Cooke) and another at 11:45 (Becker, Alexander). Now down by a goal, the Canadiennes maneuvered up and down the ice looking for an opportunity but were denied. Final Score Reivers 3-2.

The second ranked Scorpions faced the third ranked Glenlawn Lions this evening on home ice. With the series tied 1-1, both teams played to win. The Lions opened the scoring with a goal at the 6:00 mark of the first period (Clarke, Cyrenne, Aptekmann). That goal went unanswered by the Scorpions until the 9:08 mark of the second period (Romanishen, Neil). Early in the third period, Lorette scored again (Boles, Neil, Romanishen), but that goal was quickly answered by the Lions. With the minutes counting down, the Lions scored a breakaway goal at 5.58 (Leonard) to defeat the Scorpions. Final Score Lions 3-2.

The Glenlawn Lions will face the KE Reivers in their Division Playoffs at the Dakota Community Centre March 7, 9 and 13 if necessary. For additional details, check the series schedule.

Our organization is devastated by this tragic news. On behalf of our community of teams and fans, we send our most heart-felt condolences and prayers to Kelly’s wife Christine, Kate and Lauren (Sabres), Mackenzie, Carson, Julia and all their family, friends, to the Sabres women’s hockey team and the community of Sanford, as they endure this extraordinary loss.

Buckeyes, Kodiaks raise $800 for Breast Cancer

On Wednesday, the Miles Mac Buckeyes faced the River East Kodiaks in their 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraising Hockey Game. While the on-ice competition between these rival teams was the draw, it was the Buckeyes and Kodiaks off-ice leadership that enabled them to raise more than $800 for CancerCare Manitoba’s breast cancer awareness campaign.

Players and fans supported the cause through game day 50/50 sales and toonie stick raffle donated by the Jets and signed by Matthieu Perrault. The Buckeyes and the Miles Mac Collegiate YIP (Youth in Philanthropy) group also hosted two bake sales as a lead to game night.

The WWHSHL congratulates the Miles Mac Buckeyes and River East Kodiaks for their outstanding community leadership. “Our teams have a proud history of generating awareness and raising funds for causes that impact women and girls” said Carrie Snelling, WWHSHL. “The generous support of this event by the Buckeyes, Kodiaks and their fans has helped to change the course of cancer for women and girls, and we could not be prouder.”
