River East crowned Champions of Winnipeg Free Press Division B

Game Report – River East vs. St. Norbert Game Two

Sensing victory in their grasp, the River East Kodiaks started strongly. Brittany Poirier fired from the point, with the shot neatly deflected by Cassandra Szczepanski. But the St. Norbert Celtics goaltender Brooke Morin closed the 5 hole and the puck stayed out. At the other end, Keelan Dagdick led a rush, 2 on 1 with Sydney Parker. Keelan shot but the puck was gloved out of the air by the Kodiaks netminder, Sydne Valiquette. Off the draw, Brooke Sigvaldson for the Kodiaks poked the puck away from the Celtics D and was off on a break but Brooke stoned her as well as Cassandra on the rebound. But the Kodiaks smelled blood and kept up the pressure, with two shots from Keyona Tominuk and another partial break by Arden Buus. Brooke had the answer to all of them.

Something had to give, and the Kodiaks created a scramble in front of Brooke. She stopped a point blank drive from Cassandra but the puck came back to Tannar Paszkowski at the point. Tannar fired a high shot which found its way past a maze of bodies and over Brooke on its way into the net. 1-0, Kodiaks. Moments later, the Kodiaks were snarling back in the Celtics zone. Cassandra took a pass from Keyona and fired it home. 2-0 River East. In the Second Period, the Celtics, supported by their cheering, chanting, bang stick equipped fans, took the early momentum. Shots were registered by Samantha Greene and Sydney but Sydne stood tall. In reply, Keyona had a break but Brooke shut the door.

Slowly the Celtics shot total rose until it surpassed the Kodiaks but they still couldn’t solve Sydne. Finally, with only 12.4 seconds left on the clock, the Kodiaks broke St. Norbert’s hearts, with Elise Edginton converting a rebound of a Cassandra shot. But there was no quit in the Celtics and, early in the Third, Sydney had a clear break, only to be hauled down. The Referee signaled a Penalty shot. It was Sydney against Sydne. The speedy Celtics forward skated in from Centre ice. She made a nice shoulder fake and went to her backhand. It was a great move but Sydne did the splits and made the save. As the period wore on, St. Norbert continued to press and River East seemed content to try to maintain the lead. Then, with 5:22 left, Elise took a penalty.

Sensing their chance, St. Norbert called their timeout. Sydney and Kennedy Hutcheson had chances, but River East stood fast. Then, with the teams at even strength, a scramble ensued around the Celtics net. Emma Szarek had a shot and the rebound came to Kennedy. She executed a spinorama and fired a behind the back shot which found the far corner of the net. 3-1. St. Norbert tried mightily to narrow the score further, even pulling Brooke in favour of a sixth attacker, but it was not to be. Scoring was completed by Elise with an empty net goal. The final buzzer sounded moments later as the Kodiaks bench emptied and Sydne was mobbed. She was awarded a well deserved Player of the Game. Shots on goal were 27-24 in favour of the plucky Celtics.
